Hear artists and researchers from the Arab Image Foundation (AIF) in Beirut discuss the way transdisciplinary research into photographic archives develop diverse understandings of contemporary situations.
AIF members Vartan Avakian, Fabiola Hanna and Rana Nasser Eddin will share preservation and research practices at the foundation with artist Edmund Clark, who will be moderating the event. Together they will look at how research into archives contributes to wider understanding of political and social issues.
Details on how to access the talk will be confirmed upon registration. Please check your junk folders if you haven't received an email from TPG confirming your place.
Biographies
The Arab Image Foundation is an independent association forging new pathways for photography and image practices. Uniquely positioned at the intersection of artistic creation, research, and archiving, we explore, question and confront the complex social and political realities of our times.
Our collection of over 500,000 photographic objects and documents from and related to the Middle East, North Africa and the Arab diaspora has been gradually assembled over the last 25 years by artists and researchers and through donations. With a critical and innovative approach, we collect, rethink, preserve, animate and understand these photographs through their multiple strata, and enrich the collection in the process.
Edmund Clark is an artist interested in linking history, politics and representation. His research based work combines a range of references and forms including bookmaking, installations, photography, video, documents, text and found images and material. Recurring themes are visualising state power, and experiences, spaces and processes of control in contemporary conflict and other contexts. Clark spent five years as artist-in-residence in HM Prison Grendon, Europe’s only wholly therapeutic prison for violent and sexually violent offenders. He is Reader in the Political Image at the University of the Arts London.
