The Social is our free networking, skills share and advice session for photographers. Deliberately informal, each event includes short presentations by photography and related professionals, offering tips on chosen themes and encourages participants to join the conversation and share their own insights.
This session takes the theme of augmented reality and photography with Zaiba Jabbar and artist Meitao Qu.
Biographies
Zaiba Jabbar is an award-winning director, independent curator and founder of HERVISIONS (est. 2015). With over a decade of experience in the film and media sectors, her curatorial practice with HERVISIONS is an investigation into how people in the margins are using technology to create art outside of traditional contexts and making space for themselves in the digital environment. Jabbar was curator in residence at LUX in 2018 and is a board member of Abandon Normal Devices. HERVISIONS is a London based femme-focused curatorial agency, celebrating and promoting artists working across emergent technologies and platforms, with a strong focus on the intersection of art, technology and culture.
Meitao Qu lives and works between London and Beijing. Her practice is concerned with the production and circulation of images and the role they play in shaping discourses of gender, race, and nation. From costume to architecture, she is interested in how forms of visualisation operate as ‘props’ to stimulate imaginations. Through storytelling and worldbuilding, her work brings together the material and the virtual to consider the interplay between ideologies and realities. She holds an MFA from the Ruskin School of Art (2021), funded by the Oxford-Kaifeng Graduate Scholarship, and an MA from the Courtauld Institute (2020). Recent exhibitions include ‘Adventures in Fact’, The Residence Gallery, London (2022) and ‘Marx on the Table’, Folkestone Fringe, Folkestone (2021). @mt_qu
