David Bate will discuss the transition from ‘modern’ to postmodern and ‘contemporary’ photography, the increased role of photography in establishing identity and its affective value in our memories of social life and personal histories.

Open to all people the talk will introduce themes related to photography theory and practice. The event provides insight into the changing ideas about photography and its key concepts, which are reflected in recent movements and issues, and coincides with the release of his latest book Photography After Postmodernism.

Biography

David Bate is a photographer and writer, currently Professor of Photography at the University of Westminster, School of Art, London. Recent books include the monographs Photography as a Critical Practice (Intellect, 2020), Photography: Art Essentials, (Thames & Hudson, 2021) and Photography: Key Concepts, 2019). He is co-editor of the journal Photographies and has contributed to dozens of magazines, articles, books and public talks. His recent solo exhibition was Machinic Unconscious in Pingyao International Photography Festival, 2021.
