Talk: Madeleine Davis and Andrew Whitehead on Soho's radical histories (online)

Gain deeper insight into the radical histories of Soho

This event is part of our Past Programme

In this new talk we will look at the wider cultural politics of the Partisan Coffee House and what the New Left offered London youth in the 1950s. Established in 1958, the café played host to theorists Stuart Hall and John Berger, novelist Doris Lessing and many more as they engaged in socialist discourse over chess and terrible coffee.

Madeleine Davis will provide an overview of the social movements associated with the café with Andrew Whitehead will give insight into some of the noteworthy patrons featured in the photographs. They will be joined by Mike Berlin, curator of The Partisan Coffee House: Radical Soho and the New Left. Together they will discuss the ongoing significance of the Partisan Coffee House and its role in spurring the political counter cultures in the years to come.

Please note due to recent events, the gallery will be closed this day and the event will now be taking place online. All bookers will be able to gain access to the exhibition at a day of their choosing (until the exhibition ends) with their event ticket.

Details on how to access the talk will be confirmed upon registration. Please check your junk folders if you haven't received an email from TPG confirming your place.
