Photography has the ability to reveal and obscure. Explore the dual nature of the photographic image in this workshop led by artist Isabelle Young, which focuses on framing and composition as a foundation to constructing an image.
This workshop takes inspiration from photography, cinema and architecture including artists such as Steve McQueen, Eugène Atget, Francesca Woodman and Luigi Ghirri, alongside filmmakers Wes Anderson, Alfred Hitchcock, Federico Fellini and Roberto Rossellini. The day will include a visit to The National Gallery.
Please bring a camera with you in any format – analogue, digital or camera phone. Digital is preferable in order to share your images on Zoom during the Sunday session.
Format
The day begins with a presentation by Isabelle Young then a group discussion. The afternoon will be an offsite practical activity located at The National Gallery to explore framing and composition. There will opportunities throughout the day for peer review, questions and feedback. This workshop is for photographers and artists interested in developing their camera skills and experimenting with architecture and interior photography

Biography
Isabelle Young graduated from the Royal College of Art, London with an MA in Photography (2022). Isabelle Young: Stills (2023), her first solo exhibition in London, presented a new photographic series rooted in neorealist cinema. The solo exhibition Isabelle Young: In Camera at Galerie (2022, Fabian Lang, Switzerland focused on various architectural series, and the gallery recently presented her work at Artissima, Turin, Italy (2023) and Felix Art Fair, Los Angeles, USA (2023). Exhibitions include Painting with Light curated by Isabelle Young, Vortic Curated at 79 Wardour Street (2023); Palazzo Monti: Transatlantico, Mana Contemporary, Jersey City, USA (2020); Van Gogh House, London, UK (2020); Galerie Norbert Arns, Cologne, Germany (2019). Collections include Credit Suisse Collection, Switzerland; Museo Casa Mollino, Turin, Italy; Katrin Bellinger Collection, London, UK; Simmons and Simmons, London, UK; and Palazzo Monti, Brescia, Italy.
Bursaries
A number of partial bursaries covering 50 per cent of course fees will be awarded on a first come basis. Applicants who wish to be considered for a partial bursary should submit a statement (max. 500 words) to projects@tpg.org.uk, outlining how Workshop: Framing and Composition would contribute to their professional development. Successful applicants will be notified within a week of submission.
