Hear exhibition curator Thyago Nogueira give insight into the various approaches taken to display the prolific career of Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama. Joining Nogueira is Thomas Sutton, co-curator of the forthcoming survey of Hiroshi Sugimoto at Hayward Gallery. Together they will also look at what it means to show the work of these visionaries in London now. 

This talk will be moderated by Shoair Mavlian (Director, The Photographers' Gallery). 

Biographies

Thyago Nogueira is the head of the Contemporary Photography Department at Instituto Moreira Salles, Brazil and the chief editor of ZUM photography magazine. He organised exhibitions and catalogues such as Claudia Andujar: The Yanomami Struggle (Barbican, 2020), William Eggleston: American Color (2015), Body Against Body: the battle of images from photogrpahy to live streaming (2017), Mauro Restiffe: São Paulo, Beyond Reach (2014) and Rosângela Rennó: Utopic Rio (2017). He has also guest edited Aperture magazine dedicated to São Paulo photography (2014), co-curated the Offside project with Magnum during Brazil’s World Cup, and chaired Hasselblad Award in 2019. 

Thomas Sutton is assistant curator at Hayward Gallery. Since 2017, he has contributed to monographic and group exhibitions, including Andreas Gursky (2018), Kiss My Genders (2019) and In the Black Fantastic (2022). He was previously at Tate St Ives, where he co-curated a new collection display of modern British and international art. Thomas has a BA in the history of art from Oxford University and an MA in contemporary art and theory from The Courtauld Institute of Art, London.
